Wycombe Abbey International Changzhou hold first Kindergarten Sorting Ceremony
20 December 2023 - All

The name ‘Harry Potter’ is like a magic key that opens the door to children’s imagination. If your child has seen Harry Potter, has a vision for magic, and a spirit of adventure and exploration, then you should not miss the Changzhou Kindergarten House Sorting Ceremony. The sorting ceremony’s purpose is to let the children wear the sorting hat and to have the sorting hat judge which House the children should be placed in for study and life. On Wednesday 1 November 2023, the first sorting hat ceremony of Wycombe Abbey International Chanzhou Kindergarten was held. Headmaster, Dr Paul Silverwood, gave the opening speech, and the children invited their families to witness this special occasion. In his speech the Headmaster noted that the House system brings together children of all ages, like a family, supporting each other, giving a sense of belonging, and providing continuity in our community. The children will earn House Points through competitions, excellent work, and acts of kindness towards others. And they will represent their House on many occasions through physical, creative, and technical activities and performances. The sorting hat is a very worn, patched, and dirty pointed wizard’s hat, but it is not to be underestimated; it is full of magic, intelligence and thought, which is used to see what talents each student has and thus put students into the right house: Austen, Blyton, Cavell, Dove, Blake, Elgar, Hawking, Newton. Eight houses, four for boys and four for girls. The children listened carefully when their names were called. At the moment of hearing their own names, their hearts were excited and nervous. The class teacher took the Kindergarten children to the stage together, and students from Lower School and Upper School passed the wisdom of the college cap to the children and welcomed them to their respective Houses with open arms. The proud little faces of the children were full of big smiles, and they carefully passed the sorting hat to the members of their House on stage. The aim of the ceremony is to provide children of all ages the opportunity to work together, creating a truly cohesive environment, ensuring that age is not a barrier to friendship and collaboration and fostering a sense of belonging and community within the Houses and across the whole school, so that the youngest can be better integrated and have more opportunities to enjoy fun competitions. Childhood is limited, so giving children a special experience in sorting ceremonies allows them forever to be curious and explore the world with the House family together.
