WASCZ Hosts Inaugural TEDx Youth Event Exploring the Theme of “Contrast”

In June, WASCZ proudly hosted its first-ever TEDx WAS Changzhou Youth event under the theme “Contrast,” welcoming around 100 audience members for an afternoon of ideas, reflection, and youthful inspiration. More than a showcase of speeches, the event was a fully student-led initiative. During their ECA (Extracurricular Activity) time, students independently selected the theme, designed promotional materials, invited speakers, and coordinated the programme from start to finish. Their commitment and leadership transformed a vision into reality, demonstrating the power of student agency within the school community.

Six TEDx talks were delivered by a mix of school leaders, teachers, and students, each offering a distinct perspective on the theme. Executive Headmaster Mr Matthew Jamieson opened the event with a reflection on how contrast sharpens gratitude, suggesting that qualities such as courage and love gain meaning through their opposites. Grade 9 student J. Tee used the metaphor of a chessboard to explore the balance between strategy and instinct, while fellow Grade 9 speaker Y. Woo delivered a personal reflection on identity, growth, and navigating cultural contrasts. Grade 7 student J. Gao inspired the audience to act in the present rather than wait for a perfect “tomorrow,” and Grade 9 student R. Shaikh examined the tension between simplicity and luxury, encouraging listeners to find joy in “enough.” The event concluded with Chinese Principal Ms Fanny Fang, who highlighted how contrasts between Eastern and Western educational philosophies can foster deeper understanding and personal growth.

Beyond the talks, the afternoon featured artistic performances that brought the theme to life in a different language. Dance Teacher Ms Zuo joined students F. Peng, J. Wei, and K. Lin in piano and dance presentations that explored the interplay of movement and stillness, further enriching the audience’s experience. Organisers expressed pride in every speaker, performer, and volunteer who contributed to the event. Nurtured through dedicated ECA time, students’ creativity and courage turned the school’s first TEDx Youth gathering into an unforgettable celebration of ideas and expression.
